Who we are

Manazil is a Quran app for Maldivian Muslims, published by Hasan Shazil, Malé, Maldives. Contact: hshazil@gmail.com.

The short version

  • You do not need an account. Manazil never asks for your email or phone number.
  • Your saved verses, notes, reading activity, settings and location stay on your phone.
  • The only thing that leaves your phone is a recording, and only when you use Verse Finder.
  • There are no ads, no analytics and no tracking in Manazil, and we do not sell data.

What stays on your phone

These are saved on your phone and are not sent to us:

  • Your name, if you choose to add one.
  • Your reading settings: script, translations, text size, reciter and reader.
  • Your saved verses, with any notes and collections you add, and your last-read verse.
  • Your weekly activity in Reflections: which days you read or listened, how many verses you read, minutes of recitation you listened to, and your dhikr counts. About a year of it is kept.
  • Your khatm plan, if you make one: the day you choose to finish by, and which verses you have read since you started it. It is kept until you stop the plan.
  • Your chosen island, prayer time settings, and your location coordinates if you choose "My location".
  • Which reminders you have switched on.

Deleting the app deletes all of this.

Verse Finder and your recording

Verse Finder listens to a few words of your recitation to find the verse.

  • It records only after you tap the orb, and stops when you tap again or after 20 seconds.
  • When the recording ends, it is sent over the internet to a server function we run on Supabase. That function forwards it to OpenAI's speech-to-text service, which turns it into Arabic text.
  • The text is matched against the Quran on your phone to find the verse.
  • The recording is deleted from your phone as soon as it has been sent. We do not save recordings on our server.
  • Our server keeps short technical logs for fixing problems: the time, the size of the recording, and the text that was recognised. The logs do not contain the audio.
  • OpenAI handles the recording under its own terms and privacy policy, available at openai.com/policies.
  • Manazil asks you before you use Verse Finder for the first time.

Reminders

If you switch reminders on, Manazil asks your phone for permission to show notifications. Prayer times, adhkar and other reminders, including a gentle evening reading reminder that is skipped on days you have read, and, if you have a khatm plan, reminders about your daily portion, are scheduled on your phone, so they work without internet. We do not receive anything about which reminders you use or when they are shown.

Location

Manazil uses your location on your phone for the Qibla compass and, if you choose "My location" in Settings, to calculate prayer times. The coordinates are saved on your phone and are not sent to us.

Other internet requests

  • Recitation audio is loaded from everyayah.com.
  • Mushaf page fonts are loaded from our storage on Supabase.
  • Messages for Eid and other special days are read from our database on Supabase when the app opens. The request carries no personal information.

Like any website, these servers can see your IP address and which file you asked for. We do not link this to who you are.

Sharing verse images

The verse image maker uses a photo you pick from your library. The image is made on your phone. It goes only where you send it from the share sheet. We do not receive it.

Children

Manazil collects no personal information other than the Verse Finder recording described above, from children or anyone else.

Your choices

  • You can turn off microphone or location access for Manazil at any time in your phone's Settings. Verse Finder needs the microphone; everything else works without it.
  • You can delete the app to remove everything saved on your phone.

Changes

If this policy changes, the new version will be in the app, with a new date above.
